EdAid was formed in 2007 to build a secondary school in Kagera - a region in west Tanzania, close to the borders with Rwanda and Burundi. At the time there were no secondary schools for children to attend in this region. The request to build this school was made to the Anglican Bishop of Wellington (Tom Brown) who was contacted by the Bishop of Kagera (Aaron Kijanjali).

At its inception a Board of Trustees was formed who assumed responsibility to govern the charity as well as to fundraise and manage all areas of administration.

Mchungaji Mwema (Good Shepherd) Secondary School in Kagera was opened in 2007 and in subsequent years more school buildings and infrastructure has been built from the generous donations received from EdAid donors.

EdAid also now works to support additional school building projects in other countries around the world.

Providing opportunities for Secondary and Tertiary Education in less developed countries

EdAid aims to raise funds to finance the educational needs, including start up, infrastructure costs and support, and initial operating expenditure of selected places of learning in developing countries. Such projects are selected from those who will welcome on-going project reviews and audits through visits by EdAid representatives; and who will demonstrate the ability to be self-sustaining in terms of finance and work opportunities in the long term.
